A closer look at Lewis Falls

Near Lewis Falls, Lewis River flows through a large meadow. The exposure is intentionally dark to make the Teton Mountains in the distance stand out. Yellowstone is much flatter than Grand Teton National Park!

Map at the Old Faithful Geyser visitor center. Old Faithful is at the lower-right. The red spots are other geysers or hot pools. There are lots of them!
IMG_7862.jpg
The first hot pool I see while waiting for Old Faithful to blow. Like most hot pools, it's incredibly clear, and it's impossible to see how deep it is.
IMG_7864.jpg
This hot pool is bubbling with steam, but it's not quite a geyser, at least not while I was watching it.
IMG_7865.jpg
Where the hot pools and geysers run off, they leave colorful streaks. It looks like sulfur, but apparently it's mats of bacteria (microscopic organisms).

A look at Old Faithful, steaming as it does most of the time

Old Faithful again...
IMG_7878.jpg
... It's starting to gurgle...

IMG_7884.jpg
... Yes, it's erupting!

Unfortunately I was almost directly downwind of the geyser so there was a lot of steam blocking the fountain of water. I would do better on the next eruption!

The runoff from Old Faithful goes into the Firehole River

More Old Faithful runoff.

There were quite a few of these signs next to the trails by the hot pools and geysers.

Old Faithful is part of the Upper Geyser Basin. The next photos are of other hot pools and geysers in this basin. They were quite close together.
