It looks like this strange flower is growing in a ring. I would see a field of them the next day, but not in rings.

There was a huge patch of purple in the middle of the Carrizo Plain...
Unfortunately the road didn't get me close enough that I would feel comfortable leaving my motorbike so far away to see the purple flowers close up.

The next morning I started off with the flowers near the south end of Soda Lake. Also, I wanted to get a closer look at the lake.

There's the lake, surrounded by flowers

I was curious about the lumps in the lake. Were they rocks, or some sort of dense bush?
Zooming in, I can conclude two things. First, the clumps are bushes. Second, it's not water in the lake, but mud, judging by the animal tracks near the bottom!

On Elkhorn Road, headed up into the Temblor Mountains (eventually)

This road turned out to be a dead end, but there were some pretty valleys along the way
The next set of photos is from the unnamed road(s) along the ridge of the Temblor Range, heading north from Hurricane / Crocker Spring Road. These hillsides were to the east of the road.
